Weekend Outlook

Day of the Dead Celebration at The Walters
Economoms' recommendations for the best budget-conscious family activities in the Maryland region for the weekend of November 5-7:

First Fridays in Hampden: Make your way downy Avenue Friday night, Hon! Dozens of stores stay open late and offer special discounts for the monthly event. Economoms' newest sponsor, Red Tree, will be serving up free small bites courtesy of Golden West Cafe (located just down the street) and featuring local Baltimore artist Dave Peterson, who offers humorous animal prints. Doubledutch, winner of best local boutique many times over, is offering 10% off all merchandise and free treats and drinks from Red Maple. If the free munchies don't fill you up, head over to Cafe Hon for dinner. The loud, bustling 50s diner-like atmosphere is perfect for eating out with kids.

Cookies with Santa and The Grinch at Arundel Mills: Yes, it's already time for the man in red to make his first appearance!  Besides visiting with Santa and The Grinch, children can also write letters to Santa and decorate cookies. Friday, Nov. 5, 6-8 p.m. at Dave and Busters. FREE

World Championship Punkin Chunkin Event: Who would have thought that a challenge to see who could throw a pumpkin the farthest would grow to be one of the largest events in Delaware, drawing tens of thousands of people? Watch as canons chuck pumpkins thousands of feet to smash into smithereens! Highlights will be filmed by The Science Channel and will premiere on Thanksgiving night. The event, which also includes a full-scale carnival, takes place Friday, Nov. 5 through Sunday, Nov. 7 in Nassau, DE.

Visitors will enjoy traditional Mexican dance performances, a live mariachi band, food, and art activities for the whole family.
