Here are Economoms' picks for the best budget-conscious family activities in the Baltimore area for December 2-4, 2011:

Friday
  • Fridays After Five, Prices Take a Dive - At the National Aquarium and the Maryland Science Center through March 23, 2012. Admission is $8. Dolphin shows or 4-D experiences at the Aquarium are $4. IMAX shows and Planetarium presentations are FREE at the Science Center. This Friday, the Aquarium is celebrating its World Holidays Cultural Series with a special visit from Santa and its mascot, Puffin. Make holiday cards and enjoy music and dance. 
  • Holiday Lazer Show - Maryland Science Center, 5:30 p.m. every Friday through December 24.  FREE with admission.
  • Friday Night Stargazing - Maryland Science Center, 5:30-9 p.m. every Friday through January 27, weather permitting. FREE! Friday After Five admission is NOT required to participate.
  • The Long Night's Moon - Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, 7-8:30 p.m. $3 per person, $2 for members. Includes hike followed by s'mores and hot cider at a campfire.
  • The Nutcracker Ballet - Baltimore School for the Arts, 7 p.m. (Showtimes this Saturday and Sunday are sold out. Tickets still available for next weekend). $15 per adult, $10 per student.

  • Breakfast with Santa at Overhills Mansion - Catonsville. Reservations available at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. $10 for adults, $5 for children 3-12, and under 3 are FREE. Call 410-744-5700 for reservations. 
  • Breakfast with Santa at the Y - Weinberg Family Center Y in Baltimore, 9-11 a.m. FREE! 410-889-9622
  • Holiday Poinsetta Show and Train Garden - Rawlings Conservatory at Druid Hill Park in Baltimore. Events kicks off Saturday and goes through Sunday, Jan. 1. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. FREE but donation encouraged. Santa will make an appearance from 10:30 a.m.-noon this Saturday and 2-4 p.m. this Sunday!
  • Sock Monkey Saturday - American Visionary Art Museum, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Make your own sock money for FREE! Just bring two pair of socks and scissors.
  • Nutcracker Fantasy for Tots - The Puppet Company Playhouse in Glen Echo Park.10 a.m. showtimes Saturdays and Sundays through December 31. $5 per person.
  • Jingle Bugs - Carrie Murray Nature Center in Baltimore, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Holiday crafts inspired by our "six-legged" friends. $2 per person. 
  • Drop-In Art Activity at the Walters - Every Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. A different theme each month. December's theme is Island Getaway. FREE!
  • The New (Old-Time) Holiday Train Garden - The Fire Museum of Maryland in Lutherville. Saturdays through December 17 and each day December 27-31, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Family Toon Day at Port Discovery - 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Special activities including meeting Clifford the Big Red Dog and decorating ginger bricks. FREE with regular museum admission.
  • Kerplunk! Family Drop-In Art Class - Creative Alliance at the Patterson, noon-3 p.m. every Saturday through December 10. FREE!
  • Pumpkin Theatre's Rapunzel - St. Timothy's School for Girls in Stevenson. Saturdays and Sundays through December 18. 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. showtimes on both days. $15 per person.
  • The Children's Playhouse of Maryland's A Christmas Carol - CCBC Essex J Building Lecture Hall. Saturdays and Sundays through December 18; Saturdays, 1 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. $10 per person.
  • Rock the Dock Family Holiday Bash - Power Plant in Baltimore, 1-5 p.m. Live music, holiday-themed arts and crafts, games, food and drink, great giveaways and train rides along the promenade. FREE!
  • Gingerbread Houses for You and the Birds - Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, 2-4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. $5 per person, $4 for members. Includes materials for a traditional gingerbread house, as well as seeds and fruits for a bird house.
  • Holiday Cirque de la Symphonie - Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Kids receive half-price admission for matinee shows. Matinees available Saturday and Sunday, both at 2 p.m.
  • Snacks and Crafts with Santa - Owen Brown Community Center in Columbia, 3-5 p.m. $2.50 per child. RSVP to 410-381-0202 or obevents@columb​iavillages.org.
