Weekend Outlook - January 6-8, 2012

Welcome to the first full weekend of 2012! Here are Economoms' picks for the best budget-conscious family activities in the Baltimore area for Friday, Jan. 6 through Sunday, Jan. 8:

  • Half Off Admission to Port Discovery - For kids only in honor of "Purple Pride Weekend."
  • IMAX Film Festival - Maryland Science Center through March 1. Six films rotate through the festival. $12 per person (for IMAX show only, does not include museum admission). Or purchase a five movie pass for $30.
  • Military Appreciation Month at Port Discovery - Active military personnel and veterans who show valid military ID receive FREE admission, as well as one guest. Available Saturday, Nov. 19 through Monday, Jan. 2.

  • First Friday in Hampden - On the first Friday of every month, Hampden shops stay open late, offer entertainment, and provide cheap eats and drink specials. Up and down The Avenue (36th St.)

  • Drop-In Art Activity at the Walters - Every Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. A different theme each month. January's theme is Dragon Tales and Scales. FREE!
  • Old Man Winter Nature Quest - Cromwell Valley Park in Towson, noon-4 p.m. Reservation required. For ages 8+. $2 for members, $4 for non-members.
  • A Teddy Bear Tale Book Signing - Ukazoo Books in Towson, 1-4 p.m. With 20+ RSVPs, the author will perform storytelling from the book. FREE!
